Having never visited Tzu Chi before, I did not know what to expect when I attended the opening ceremony of the Journey to the West on the Silk Road exhibit at the Cedar Grove, NJ site on November 24th. I knew a little bit about Tzu Chi from my new mother-in-law who often volunteers and is very dedicated to Tzu Chi, but I still had some questions. I¡¦m not Asian, would I be welcomed? Would everyone speak Chinese? Would I have a difficult time understanding what was being said? Who is Master Hsuan Tsang?
My uncertainties were quickly put to rest. As soon as my father-in-law, husband and I entered the building, we were greeted by warm smiles and words of welcome (in Chinese and English!). Shortly before the opening ceremony began, a volunteer handed me an earpiece so that I could listen to the English translation of the speeches. What a pleasant surprise! The ceremony was a beautiful and enlightening event including speeches from local politicians, a choreographed signing dance and a lecture by a well respected and venerable monk. With the translator speaking in my ear, I had no problem following along.
However, what I enjoyed most about the day was learning about Master Hsuan Tsang. His is a story of courage, adventure, strength of will and unflinching faith in his religion. He traveled amazing distances and encountered numerous dangers yet never lost sight of his goal to collect Buddhist scriptures so that he may translate them and strengthen Buddhism in China. The photography exhibit allowed us the opportunity to see the places Master Hsuan Tsang had traveled and to learn more his about journey. I was very interested to discover that many of the cultures and traditions of the people in these areas have changed little since Master Hsuan Tsang passed through in the seventh century. However, other areas have changed dramatically. So much so that beautiful Buddhist art such as enormous sculptures have been completely eradicated.
While exploring the exhibit, my husband and I were interviewed by a Tzu Chi journalist. There is one question I would like to readdress: ¡§What is your impression of the event?¡¨ I have to say that I was thoroughly impressed with the efforts that Tzu Chi and its volunteers put into making the Journey to the West exhibit a memorable event. I have certainly gained a greater appreciation for Buddhist and Chinese culture, and I think often about Master Hsuan Tsang and his incredible journey.
